Signal is testing a solution to avoid making phone numbers public

Encrypted messaging app Signal is about to roll out a long-awaited feature as users can now communicate with others simply by posting their username, rather than their phone number.
The app is also testing opening the possibility of adding usernames to accounts instead of publishing phone numbers to communicate via encrypted messages.
Other secure messaging platforms, like Telegram and Wire, have offered this feature for some time, and while Signal took a long time to include it, it maintains a good reputation for security.
The feature is being developed internally, and the app says it’s in the final stages before a public launch, inviting users to test it out in a private test environment.
Signal CEO Meredith Whitaker said the username feature is expected to launch in early 2024. Participating users are asked to download a separate test app and provide feedback on any user experience issues.
Phone numbers are associated with devices and pose a target for hackers, so the username feature is considered a step toward enhancing privacy as users can communicate without revealing sensitive personal information.
