Nvidia plans to release new artificial intelligence chips for China

Nvidia plans to launch new artificial intelligence chips for the Chinese market in response to the United States tightening regulations on the sale of artificial intelligence technology to China.

The new chipsets, called HGX H20, L20 PCIe, and L2 PCIe, will be announced on November 16th.

These chips incorporate NVIDIA’s strengths in artificial intelligence while specifying some computing standards to comply with new U.S. regulations. Nvidia, which supplies graphics processing units that dominate the artificial intelligence market, gets about a quarter of its data center chip revenue from China.

The new rules limit the computing power a chip can contain and include a gray area in which chips can be shipped to China under a license.

The report said that all of Nvidia’s chips appeared to be below the maximum computing power limit, raising questions about the seriousness of Nvidia’s response to U.S. restrictions.

At the same time, expectations suggest the move could open the door for local companies such as Huawei to take advantage of opportunities that may arise from U.S. restrictions
